So many people are talking about the lava flow and the recent eruptions in Leilani estates right now and all over the news. It causes me to reflect on where and why MANA BEADS came into being.
My daughter Ka'iminaniloa was living on Maui when I first was called to live on Big Island in 2008. On one of her visits to see me, I was taken back by an overflowing love for her when I first saw her. I brushed it off as having just simply missed her. Then later when we were in the jacuzzi, I noticed deep scratches on her ankle and asked her about them. She then began to tell me about a close encounter that she had in the Ocean. It had been raining lots and she decided to go for a swim in the ocean. Everyone knows that you don't go in the ocean immediately after a heavy rain because the currents can be strong and dangerous. But it was such a beautiful day, she over rode her na'au and went swimming anyway. She got caught in the current and wrestled to free herself, continuously loosing the battle and being swept out to sea. The male friend that was with her couldn't help her and she began to get so exhausted and tired. She has been trained spiritually from very young on how to use her spiritual powers and discipline her mind so that she wouldn't panic, however she inwardly knew that she was at her absolute limit. at the point when she began to give up, suddenly a lava rock from the bottom of the ocean rose up to her foot and as she kicked in effort to free herself from the strong current, her ankle scrapped against this lava rock. It appeared out of nowhere and the lava gave her just the right leverage to push off of so that she could free herself from the current. Certainly a blessing from Pele. As she told me, how this lava appearing out of nowhere, saved her life that day, I was humbled recognizing that when I first laid eyes on her that day, the overwhelming feeling of love was my great appreciation and gratitude for her life. I never saw lava in the same way again and we went to the ocean and offered the lava and Tutu Pele our humblest prayers and thanksgiving in sacred ceremony.
As Kahu, in recognizing the sacredness of life, the sacredness of mana, I have a deep kuleana to learn to live in prayer without ceasing and I have been in this practice now for many years. I have also studied the five major holy books and practiced bhakti yoga since 1977. So many of the various religions all use a form of rosary or prayer bead as a spiritual practice to discipline the mind. And lua warriors do believe that your first weapon is the mind and that it must be polished. So I have always used prayer beads of various gemstones as a favorite modality to keep my mind in kapu aloha. So as my love relationship grew with the lava, it became a natural segway to use lava beads in my ceremonial prayer malas. Lava, like other gemstones, carries a healing vibration that is very grounding. It has the quality of transformation, divine protection, cleansing and purification and is excellent for blessings and diffusing healing essential oils. LAVA HAS GREAT HEALING PROPERTIES, HOLDS MEMORY AND SACRED INTENTION.
Our gems are all personally chosen and native to the earth and not native to the 'aina of Hawaii nei. In alignment with hawaiian protocol, lava cannot be removed from hawaiian lands. The lava we choose to use is imported to Hawaii out of respect for this sacred tradition and blessed and used in sacred ceremony in sacred sites on the 'aina with chants and rituals. We lay these stones on the sacred pohaku which we have been given permission to use. These mana beads pick up the mana of the chosen stones and the vibration and memory are held. Lava, much like Hawaiian salt, is great for holding memory and holds nicely the blessings and chants that are offered. Lava gemstone is also great for dispensing essential oils which may also be used for prayers and sacred healing intentions.

Where Mana Beads Healing Chakra Gemstones All Began in Ahupua'a o Keahialaka
According to a Mo'olelo in "Hawaiian Legends of Volcanoes" by William Drake Westervelt, 1916; Keahialaka was the First Place Pele Arrived at prior to making her home in Kīlauea.
Keahialaka translates to "The Fire of Laka";
Laka Being the Hawaiian Goddess of Hula and Maile, the Sacred Ceremonial La'au.
